Sorry to drop in so far back in a thread after being off for two weeks .
. . but, contrary to this experience, i found computers astonishingly
fun in the 70's.  Bought me'self a heathkit.  Once that was up, had to
build the interface card to make the cassette deck be a hard drive. Then
we needed a modem . . .

And there were two women in the class doing this (of about 8 or 9
students).

I think the much bigger issue was the peer pressure.  Those women got
about as many dates as the guys did . . .

I agree.  In the world I was working in in high school, we were HAPPY to
see any woman take an interest.  So was the instructor, the people at
the local community college (where we had to go to learn COBOL and
assembly so we could program), etc.

Sexism arguments were going on in the PE department about whether women
should be allowed to play baseball and football.  :)
