If you wish to encourage children to pursue technology as a
career and to understand that there is more to computers than
Doom, you may wish to look into your local TECH CORPS chapter.
This organization was started to help schools, teachers and
administrators utilize technology in the classroom in creative
and innovative ways. In Illinois, we currently have one pilot
project going with the Chicago Public Schools that will help
teachers understand technology and how they can use it to manage
their work load.
Part of the issue with technology and teachers is that they
haven't been trained or they spend their training time on their
chosen field instead of technology. TECH CORPS is trying to
bridge that gap. The national web site is http://www.ustc.org.
A few years ago when I approached a school to volunteer, there
was little interest. But, now, there are teachers who are more
open to having technology in their class so it has become easier.
Eventually each teacher will understand the importance of
computers in their classrooms. The key is to have teachers
remember that a computer isn't a glorified baby-sitter and that
interaction between teachers and students will always be
necessary.
