Seems like I recall mention on Terrarium of its getting some 50,000
visitors a week (I stand corrected if I'm wrong). For a site that doesn't
do much of anything useful, it's sure attracting a lot of interest. I sure
wouldn't call that a "limited" audience. He's sure reaching a lot more
readers than most of our less risky work.

Terrarium appears to me to be a portfolio piece rather than a commercial
site. As such, its creator has taken an opportunity to push the edge of the
envelope a bit, to show off his design skills. I suspect he's smart enough
to realize that he shouldn't use layers on a commercial site unless he uses
a browser detect to serve up a dumbed-down version.

Things change: a year from now someone on this list will undoubtedly be
saying, "The Net is populated with MANY surfers who use pre-5.x browsers."
I can remember vividly the time not so long ago when I used tables with
fear and trepidation, knowing that AOL and some other browsers didn't
display them correctly. Now tables are de rigeur, standard fare. What's the
harm in having some creative fun, innovating, experimenting, demonstrating
new possibilities? He's obviously not costing anyone any sales--he's just
stretching his creative wings. If we don't push and innovate, how can we
expect the browser developers to keep innovating too? (I just wish they'd
push *together*!)
