I did 2 years out of 4 at Hollins College, a very prestigious and hideously
expensive private [mostly] womens' liberal arts college in Roanoke, Va. It
was a collossal waste of my parents money.

I then spent nine months getting an Associates Degree in fashion design at
FIT (the Fashion Institute of Technology) in NYC. As I recall, the tuition
for that year at FIT for this non-NY state resident was something like
$700, plus living expenses. That year was a heady, exhilarating experience,
one that I shall never forget. FIT is part of the State University of New
York, and is heavily sponsored by the fashion industry. The curriculum is
marvelous, precisely on target. Within a year or two I was making $14,000 a
year, which in the early '70s was a heck of a lot of money.

After my son was born, I became interesting in learning about graphic
design. I spent two quarters at Central Piedmont Community College,
Charlotte NC. On advice of an art director friend, I took only the courses
taught by one woman whom, I was told, was one of the best anywhere. Those
courses cost $3 each, plus art supplies.

My experience in these two vocational junior colleges led me to hold little
respect for the average 4 year college curriculum. My experience teaching
Web design at our local university in Ashland further diminished that
respect. Now I recommend that people find a good program that teaches
specifcally what they want to learn, rather than letting some college
dictate. I think the two junior colleges that I attended were especially
good because of heavy involvement by people actually working in the trades
that they taught, something that may be lacking in 4 year schools.
