Have you plowed through http://www.realaudio.com for instructions? It's
been a year or two since I was there, but I found most of what I needed.
First, you'll need to host your files on a Web host running RealAudio
server software, and there may be an extra monthly charge for the service,
probably in the $35 to $50/month range or higher if your site gets a lot of
traffic.
Besides the RealAudio music file itself, you'll need a text file called a
"meta file" which contains only a special url that points to the server
where your RA (RealAudio) files are hosted. The meta file is just a text
file containing only a line of text that'll look something like this:
pnm://www.amp.org/ssdra/BB-2022.RA
Your RealAudio server's administrator will help you with setting up the url
correctly.
Your RA file will not play directly off your html page. It requires this
intermediate step so that if you click on the link to the RA file on you
web page, it points to the meta file, and the meta file then points to the
RA file. The meta file will have a .RAM extension, while the RA music file
will have an .RA extension.
To see how this works go to http://www.shrapnelrecords.com/bb-2022.htm
If you mouse over the hypertext link that says "play real audio at 28.8"
and watch your browser's status bar, you'll see that the link points to the
.RAM file. This is a normal hypertext link:
<A HREF="BB-2022.RAM">Play sample at 28.8.</A><BR>
If you wanted, you could use an graphic image or icon in place of the
hypertext.
We have a peculiar setup with this site, in that the majority of the site's
files are hosted on a Mac server. We learned as we were well into setting
up the site that the RealAudio server software for the Macintosh doesn't
work well and the site's host decided not to run it at all. So, we have the
RA files on another IPP altogether (amp.org). The .RAM files live on the
same server as the html files, but the RA files are on a completely
different NT host machine run by a different company. If your IPP does run
RealAudio, then there is no need for a separate host or to have your .RA
files on a separate server.
When we built this site a couple of years ago, lots of people were still
using 14.4 modems, so we also put a copy of the RA files on the regular
server with the rest of the html files so that people with 14.4 servers can
download the files instead of streaming them.
We are currently rebuilding this site using a Filemaker backend instead of
html pages, so when the site debuts on its new host in a month or two, all
the various types of files will live on one hosting company's servers.
If your current IPP doesn't server RealAudio, there are lots who do. If you
wish, you can write [EMAIL PROTECTED] about hosting your RA files or your
entire site on www.amp.org.
I hope this helps. Feel free to ask any other questions.
Also, there are techniques for cheating RealAudio by pseudo-streaming audio
files. Unfortunately I know *nothing* about them.
