Hi
[lots snipped...]
Suzanne is correct about most of what she has said and yes, look at the
Real site; http://www.real.com/ for the full details. There are two
downloadable files that contain all the info.
However if you only want to play pre-encoded sounds as you seem to want,
i.e. not live sound as in a radio broadcast, online guest etc. you do not
need to have a Real server at all. The normal web server will do the job
just fine. There is info on it at the Real site. Obviously if you have a
lot of it being hit hard you should take the load off the web server and
use the real server.
The info Suzanne gave on the little text file is correct and many people
forget that bit. If you don't use it and simply put in the file name, it
will not stream but be downloaded first... which of course may also be a
desirable outcome, depending on your needs.
The info files I mentioned above also tell you how to use the real plugin
so you can imbed the real audio/video controls in a web page rather than
the separate player. I think it requires the user to have Java enabled
however.
I've been doing a fair bit of this lately for online guests. The guest and
interviewer can be at the computer doing the encoding (or one on a
telephone) and the result gets encoded and distributed via a real server
(the free basic server). Questions from the "audience" can come back via
ICQ, IRC, web board or email. It works well.
thanks
Bruce
