Well... I did kind of wonder that too :) I work in the Windows environment
myself but not especially out of choice... I've just always been in a
position where I've had to because my clients do... constantly exchanging
DOS/Windows files of various kinds. But I do know that a Mac is still a
superior machine in most respects for graphic design work, especially as
regards its color calibration capabilities. Even an elderly Mac is going to
be a much better machine than a "486 clone", in every respect.
In any case, even supposedly similar Windows machines (and browsers)
will produce nasty surprises as to how they render the graphics one has
so lovingly crafted... as you note, the solution is to test, test and test
some more, on a wide variety of platforms. While you'll never get your
graphics looking perfect on every one, you can at least reduce the most
egregious problems.
A very good way of doing this testing is simply to send an "RFF" (Request
for Feedback) posting to the WC list here. Our members run a diverse
range of browsers, hardware and operating systems, and can help each
other catch all sorts of nasty little anomalies in our pages.
