there isn't much selection when it comes to Telnet clients for the Mac..
the only ones i know of are BetterTelnet, NCSA Telnet, and NiftyTelnet, all
of which are available at from the following FTP site:

    ftp://mirror.apple.com/mirrors/Info-Mac.Archive/comm/inet/

you can also find them at any other Info-Mac mirror, from AMUG, or from any
of the UMich Mac shareware mirrors.

i personally like NiftyTelnet, but the differences among the three are minimal.

once you've downloaded and installed the client of your choice, starting a
Telnet session is vaguely like configuring an email client. you tell it
which server you want to connect to, then click the "Connect" button.
your machine will open a connection to the server, which will give you a
standard username/password challenge.

there are a whole batch of optional settings you can have for your telnet
session, almost all of which can be safely ignored indefinitely. it's
best to stick with the default settings in most cases, unless you know
specifically what your change will do.

once you've logged in, you're out of Mac territory and thoroughly into the
world of unix.
