Hello,

I use the Perl::Pg module in a Web site content management system. I was
wondering if using DBI would make the task of porting the system to another
database quicker and/or easier. If I understand the concept correctly, DBI
is a "database independent programming layer," and writing scripts using
strict DBI can use different database backends with little to no
reprogramming.

How different is say using the different PERL extensions, Perl::Oracle,
Perl::SQL, than using DBI?

Has anyone experienced the pros or cons of either when a backend may change
depending on the application's needs such available resources -- system,
monetary or otherwise?

We're using Linux (most recent, stable build), PERL 5.004.x, PostgreSQL
6.3, DBI 1.73. We also have NT servers that might be used similarly in the
future.

Warmest regards,

Luana M. Howard
