Probably the site is using SSL and they have a "borrowed" certificate. It's
possible that the hosting service is providing them with a secure
certificate, but that the domain on the certificate does not match the
domain that the certificate is being apply to. In other words, Joe Blow's
Hosting Service lets someone.com use joeblow.com's certificate, saving
someone.com the cost of getting their own, but creating browser warnings due
to the discrepancy.

Now that part puts some holes in my theory, in so far as my understanding of
SSL certificates. Perhaps it's possible that some people have browsers that
don't notify the user of the discrepancy...or maybe the user accepted the
discrepancy once and clicked a button that told the browser not to notify
them further.
