If I were going to any of them, I'd go to that one. But it's hard for
me to imagine why anyone would bother with the incredible expense,
hassle, and time to put on or attend a trade show/expo/conference when
the whole thing can be done over the 'net at a fraction of the cost
and with several orders of magnitude more convenience. I gotta admit it:
I just don't get it. I mean, I read these articles about the incredible
snafus at Comdex, and it sounds like the fifth circle of hell -- I can't
imagine why anyone would go there voluntarily.
Oh sure, you don't get the showbiz aspect of it -- but hopefully
everyone reading this realizes that (a) it's pure garbage and (b) you're
paying for it because the vendors that are unethical enough to try to
sell their products that way are also passing along the costs to
their customers.
This is something that puzzles me in general though: as far as I'm
concerned, "business" travel is dead, obsolete, useless, a has-been.
Yet people still insist on this archaic practice. I think it's just
a way for a lot of them to get out of the office, or to attempt
to justify their do-nothing jobs, or to rack up frequent flyer miles.
So call me a crusty stick-in-the-mud (Hey! Crusty!) but I'd rather
do my homework from the comfort of my chair right here than wander
jet-lagged around some huge convention hall with overpriced bad food.
Besides, I do enough travel already. 31,000 miles of driving in
the last 10 months. ;-)
