Not to mention the grammar and the punctuation. I keep saying to
our new clients that you wouldn't dream of printing a brochure or a
page feature without checking the English on it, so why do it on the
Web when more people can see it...
My favourite example is of a magazine publisher who put up a
"placeholder" Web site, which I think makes the magazine looks
far worse than not having a site at all. Having an About Us page
which says (literally):
[Name} was founded in 1986 and is read by blah blah blah (put stuff
here)
Not really *bad* writing per se, but it's astonishing that they would
put something like that up when they would be embarrassed by so
much as a typo in the print version. *sigh*
Sounds like your market rates are much the same as here. We'd
charge between roughly US$30 and US$80 per hour for writing,
depending on whether it was a simple editing of supplied text or
had to be generated from scratch.
(And we work in both English English and US English, following
years of producing books and reports translated from Japanese for
the benefit of UK and US corporations!)
Best of luck with the hunt for a good writer -- there do seem to be
too few in the Web world :-)
