Greetings,
A new customer wants a searchable web site similar to the one at
http://www.buddysmarineland.com/. One can search a database for outboard
info by horsepower, for example. The referenced site uses a program called
Web Catalog (http://www.webdna.com/pr/releases/webcatalog_61898.html).
At this juncture in my career, I have yet to create any type of
database-driven web site, but could probably do it with the right resources.
(I got through my first Americart site without proving the Peter Principle.)
At any rate, the customer is not ready for such a commitment, as this is to
be his first site. He's willing to pay my going rate for a 60-page site,
but if I tell him it's going to double the price....well, it might scare him
off.
I believe he would be happy with any solution that worked reasonably well.
I suggested a simple site-specific search engine for basic product info, and
an information request form for prices which change regularly. That would
enable him to upgrade in the future without a complete site redesign. At
some point in the future, he would like to have a database with all 10,000
of his products and parts, as well as a shopping cart. But not now.
I know I'm not being overly specific, but it's my ignorance which precludes
wiser questions, not a desire to be vague. :-)
Opinions, anyone?
