All they seemed to want to do, is to prevent others from practicing
the arts of programming. Yes, I remember them in the mid 70's, when they
pushed for the CDP and licensing. And the ACM, which was opposed to their
antics. I was a member of the ACM then, and attended a number of their
lectures in the United Engineering Building in New York City in the late
70's and early 80's. Including one by an interesting lady who had one of
the first IBM software patents. She said there were only something like
five or seven major software architectures. In my mind, I counted 12 that
night, including spreadsheets and word processors...

But in contrast with the women I kept meeting back in the boonies of
Connecticut, she had a Mind! And she wore no makeup, using her Mind and
Character to represent her, rather than mere "face". (Sigh...) I would
have stayed after the meeting to talk, but I had a bus to catch back to
the boonies.

(Should have missed the bus... had friends there who would have put
me up for the night. Sigh... That and another chat I missed due to time..
one with a Larry(?) Bond about his soviet submarine slides at the 1982 war
gaming conference in Baltimore; but he was busy chatting with some
insurance salesman type named Clancy. Even without my butting in, Tom did
give his sub captain the same name as my uncle. Kept me up two nights
with his danged book... I had to give it away to keep from getting stuck
in it yet again! Red light floods the bridge as Ramuis raises the
periscope in the dead of night... his peek, hoping to catch US ship to
ship signaling revealing "AAA Red October Entire soviet fleet looking for
you"... acknowledge with one ping from your sonar... Old 007 didn't
understand the man at all, didn't do him justice. And Tom's later wildly
speculative description of a military fire fight in the courtyard of the
soviet white house... what hope we had! Then seeing it even more
graphically on the evening news some years later. Sometimes fiction
starts truth...)

Dreaming with my eyes open again... seeing things as they were, not
as I saw them the first time. Sigh...
