I occasionally use "live video" via a web page as part of my sales
pitch to agencies and clients. The only thing that works three quarters
of the time, is a web page with a five second "pull" type refresh set in a
header line, and a new image copied to the .jpg file referenced by the
page. If you run that off a CGI, and do not need menus or text, then you
can get away with using a CGI to feed primary headers with a refresh tag,
and just the whole image. Usually, you really need a few links to faster
and slower refreshes, and other information.
Even with that abysmal technology, over one quarter of the places I
call can not get things set up properly because of old browsers, AOL, etc.
Push will cause some machines to open a new page for each image, till
they crash. Frames can cause further problems, not updating, losing
frame, etc. depending upon browser.
Plugins are just not time effective from the client's point of view,
and most are not technical enough to install them.
Your audience may differ from mine; but if you are trying to reach
parents who could not attend, I would dare say your audience is less
capable than mine.
