Well, I'm probably quibbling here, but Lynx does support tables,
strictly speaking -- or at least versions since about (I beleive) 2.6
have. From the 2.8 documentation:

"Lynx recognizes the TABLE element and all of its associated
    elements as described in ftp://ds.internic.net/rfc/rfc1942.txt."

The problem, as Javilk notes, is more that it doesn't handle them
very well, or at least not when they are being used to create very
dense and elaborate page lay-outs. For obvious reasons. Lynx copes
with tables by inserting a linefeed after a <tr> or <th>, and spaces
after a <td>. If you need to present *actual* tabular data via Lynx
(financial statements, e.g.), it's often preferable to use <pre>.

Still and all, it makes a valiant effort. I routinely run my sites
through the latest Lynx, and they are generally quite comprehensible.
If I have nav graphics (with alt text, of course) in a table cell
running down the left margin, for instance, they will be neatly
aligned in a row at the top of the Lynx page, with the body text
following.

Lynx also handles forms fairly well now too. I can call up the
postcard page on my Almonte site (very table- and graphics-heavy),
and can easily find my way around... AND send a post card via the
Perl-based form. (Though of course I can't view the postcard first :)
