I realise that this may have been discussed earlier but I was hoping to
locate some more information or guidance. Throughout my experience with
web page design I have come across a variety of META tags, primarily:
<META NAME="GENERATOR" ....,
"TITLE"
"COMMENT"
"KEYWORDS"
"CLASIFICATION"
"AUTHOR"
"REV_AUTHOR"
"ALTERNATE_TITLE"
"NEW"
"UPDATED"
"EXPIRES"
"PRODUCT"
"COPYRIGHT"
"REVISIT-AFTER"
"ROBOTS"
"TEMPLATE"
and also: <META HTTP-EQUIV="Content-Type"
Although I am familiar with several of these, I am not sure why the
others are used, when they are appropriate and what purpose they
achieve. For example: Why is "AUTHOR" or "GENERATOR" used? Does any
search engine list who the authors are ? or is it purely a REMark
statement, hence why is it not placed within <!-- -->? Why may it be
necessary to specify the GENERATOR? I understand something like :
<META NAME="GENERATOR" CONTENT="Mozilla/4.04 [en] (WinNT; I)
[Netscape]">
but why on earth would someone spend time and file space specifying :
<META NAME="GENERATOR" CONTENT="MS-NOTEPAD">
or
<META NAME="GENERATOR" CONTENT="MS-WORD 97">
Excuse me if I sound a bit ignorant on some of these but I've been
trying to find the logic and reasoning and I can't for the earth of me
find "functional" as opposed to "annotational" purposes for some of
these tags. Would someone be able to specify some web links or books
with more information on what tags are available, how they should be
used and what their purpose is?
