Barry,
Though I guess that this is a more complicated issue I think that you should
probably handle it much as you handle any other contracted project. You didn't
give a lot of detail here about the job, but as a general rule I do not do
*any* work without 50% of estimated cost up front.
For example, if this project is estimated at 100 hours I would ask for 50 hours
of pay before even beginning the project. Then, after 50 hours of work I would
bill them weekly for the remaining time that you spend on the project.
This is simply my opinion, but I think it's smart to have them "show you the
money" before you put a lot of time and effort into something... this gives you
a gaurantee that you won't get if you simply trust them to pay you.
