I've just upgraded to Photoshop 5. It has a lot of slick new features,
including astonishing control over drop-shadows, beveling, blah blah blah.

I was making some images for the page at
http://www.women-connect-asia.com/articles/timor-visit.htm

I went to save the photo images on this page as jpegs, and then out of
curiousity, since I hadn't done this in PS 5 before, I checked the file
sizes of the images (I saved them at maximum compression). All the images
on the page were 22 - 34Kb.

I then took the same images (not the jpeg, the psd format file) and
re-saved them as jpegs in Adobe Image Ready at max. compression. Now the
file sizes were only 2-4Kb and the quality was basically the same (these
are the images you see on the page right now).

I've been using ImageReady for about 3 months, before that I had used
Photoshop v4 for quite awhile. I never noticed what a dramatic difference
there was in compression abilities between these two programs.

I have heard that ImageReady is not just a re-worked version of Photoshop:
it is all new-code from the ground up. It is certainly superior in the jpeg
department, and I also know that it is vastly superior when it comes to
optimizing gifs for minimum file size.

Worth the US$199 price if you do a lot of web image work. ImageRead is also
fantastic when it comes to making gif files of text, like for titles and
subheads.
