Hi folks,
Normally I avoid HTML editors like the plague (*). However, a
request on another list (for technical writers) prompted me to wonder
about them. Hope someody here can tell me a little about them.
The request was for a system to let the staff in a company
"publish documents to the web" using a unified style. I started
to reply with a description of a database& html forms system that
could be easily built to handle something like this. However,
with some thought I realized that forms alone wouldn't provide a
very friendly editing environment.
Ideally, such an environment would be much more like a word
processor, with all the trimmings, but with some ability to pin down
elements of layout and structure, and to share a set of cascading
style sheets with the database (most notably to at the very least
import the style sheets by hand, preferably to automatically import
them directly from the server. The program would then connect to the
server and post the data instead of saving it.
If I were feeling sufficiently masochistic, I'm sure I could
teach myself enough to build such a thing using Ms-Word and
VisualBasic. Do any of the HTLM editors out there possess sufficient
flexibility and extendability to build something like this on them?
Lacking a better idea, maybe I'll start with a GUI version of
emacs and build from there... (My favorite editor is emacs - though I
hear consisently good things about DreamWeaver and the few times I've
worked with code produced by it, it was quite clean compared to
Ms-Word. A distressing tendency to lock table cells down to pixel
widths & heights when you're not looking, though).
