this is a bit premature.. i was planning to send out an RFF in about a week
for people to kick the tires.. but i've been working on a web-based
document management and formatting system which might be close to what
you're looking for.
i know i'm going to regret this, especially because i just (as in: an hour
ago) uploaded a revised beta of the code for testing, but what the heck.
i *think* i've gotten everything wired in properly, but i've changed some
of the resource management code, so there may be some lurking glitches that
need to be fixed.
the demo is at:
http://www.yawp.com/edit/index.html
and there's a very thin description of how the thing is supposed to work
interspersed among the links.
thinkos aside, the version currently online implements a staged,
form-based, template driven editing system designed to split the process of
designing a page layout apart from the gruntwork of putting content in it.
it's more or less an automated version of the cut-n-paste process used by
every professional with a zillion nearly-identical pages to build. the
big advantage is that it's about a million times faster than a human (can
*you* do a hundred pages a second?), and not prone to typos.
i'm still expanding the feature set.. i want to put in a heirarchical
dictionary system which will collect commonly-used information so you don't
have to edit your templates as much, and a bulk-input system which will
allow a pro to upload a whole directory full of text files and submit them
as a batch. i'm also planning to put in a link that will pack the whole
output directory up in a tarball, for download and transport to another
server.
be that as it may, the core features are present and (hopefully) working,
and i'd appreciate feedback from the kind of people who'd be likely to use
it.
mike stone <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> 'net geek..
been there, done that, have network, will travel.
