Mm... "lies, damned lies, and statistics", to quote Disraeli... there
is nothing even remotely objective or random about the data compiled
on the StatMarket site. Although the company claims to provide a "a
highly accurate source of data on Internet user trends", in fact all
their numbers show is the traffic patterns on a relatively small
number of sites (40,000) that have installed the HitBox Tracker
utility.
Tracker is a Java-based application that apparently displays
"realtime" useage figures to visitors. This is all fine and well,
but it immediately skews the statistics considerably: it reports only
the traffic passing through a small number of sites whose owners have
opted to install a rather pointless Java gimmick. Which would
immediately exclude the great majority of "mainstream" sites around
the Web.
According to the B.M. Eades Media Corp, my opinions on this topic are
correct 97.25% of the time, 19 times out of 20 :)
