To the extent that the "one-man project" characterization is true (and in a sense it's undeniable), it may be helpful to make the analogy of Linux, where there are many, many developers, but Linus is the gatekeeper for the release tree, and is the final arbiter of every patch to that tree, as well as the final authority on overall design and direction questions. Of course, Linux is a bigger project, and there are a lot of project leaders for various parts of the tree.
