the particular problem with AskBot was that the e-mail subscription is not based on double opt-in. However, this is a legal requirement in Germany and many other countries. Otherwise we would be subject to an expensive cease and desist letter.
As a workaround, we only enabled signup via OpenID, until AskBot improves this, or we can develop our own authentication mechanism.
I agree this is tedious and annoying, however, from a legal POV, we - sadly - have no other choice at the moment.
