Conservative Republicanism Is A Blight On This Nation
http://tinyurl.com/cexr6j
I know, I know, the title is far too gentle, so let me tell you how I really
feel:
Now that Republican Conservatives have officially managed to ruin everything,
from the banking system, to the budget deficit, to the endless wars in Iraq and
Afghanistan, they are shocked, shocked, that the rest of the country is holding
them to account. They feel victimized! ...
Think about [it]. When have Conservative Americans ever been correct about
anything? At the nation's founding they were Tories, during the Civil War they
were slave owners, during the Depression they were the cause, in the Second
World War they were isolationists. They opposed virtually every program, law or
principle that has made this country great. Rather than whining about
victimization, they should be ashamed. Of course, Herbert Hoover whined, too.

If You Lived Here You'd Be Home(less) Now!
"Hoovervilles", tent cities of people who have lost their homes to foreclosure
during this economic crisis, are being dubbed "Bushvilles" in honor of the man
behind the modern version....
Other names that have been suggested:
- Shruburbs
- Georgetowns
- Bushburgs
- Dubtowns
- 43 Legacy Estates
- Dubvilles
- Pretzelvania
- Bush Boomtowns
- Dubyapolis
- Mayberry, W.M.D.
- Bush Gardens

- Dispossession Vista
- Defaulty Towers
- Crapacre
- Peasant Valley
- Trickledowntowns
- Zero Downs
- Deregulation Station

And those who have an extra large tent/shack in these areas will, naturally, be
living in a Dubya-wide....

Pipe War! Plumbers Union Rips Joe The Plumber For Campaigning Against EFCA
http://tinyurl.com/d22fyl
The Plumbers Union is steaming over the news that Joe the Plumber has been
enlisted by groups opposed to the Employee Free Choice Act to campaign at a
number of Pennsylvania rallies against the measure.
A Plumbers Union official tells me that Joe is "selling out real plumbers"
I checked in with Rick Terven, the political and legislative director for The
United Association of Journeymen and Apprentices of the Plumbing and Pipe
Fitting Industry of the United States and Canada. (Sorry, I couldn't resist
sharing the full name.) He tore into his high-profile plumber colleague as
follows:
"Joe the plumber is selling out real plumbers. Right now, labor law is stacked
against real plumbers. Real plumbers want and need the Employee Free Choice Act
as a way to empower themselves to join a union, without fear of intimidation or
losing their jobs. Joe the Plumber doesn't speak for real plumbers." ...

A GOP BUDGET WITH NO HARD NUMBERS
http://firstread.msnbc.msn.com/archive/2009/03/26/1867398.aspx
Yesterday, House Republicans made a pretty big deal about unveiling their
budget alternative.
In fact, we received this email from a House GOP spokeswoman, "Given the
President's comments [Tuesday] night that, 'we haven't seen a budget out of
[Republicans],' we wanted to make sure to make you all aware that we are
introducing our Republican Budget Alternative tomorrow."
And then what happens today? House Republicans release a 19-page document that
contains no hard spending numbers or deficit projections. Per the AP, "One of
the few hard bits of information is a promise to simplify the tax code and cut
income tax rates to 10 percent for people making $100,000 or less down. They
also promise to cut domestic spending below current levels but don't say
whether they are exempting Social Security. It's impossible to determine the
projected deficit based on their offering." ...
Not surprisingly, the Democratic National Committee pounced on the GOP's budget
-- or lack thereof. "After 27 days, the best House Republicans could come up
with is a 19-page pamphlet that does not include a single real budget proposal
or estimate," said DNC spokesman Hari Sevugan. "While there had been talk that
House Republicans were overriding their Senate counterparts to offer a budget
alternative, it's clear after this announcement that neither of them have
anything to offer but criticism."

MY FAVORITE BUDGET EVER
http://tinyurl.com/clsh7y
If you're having a bad day, I highly encourage you to spend some quality time
with the Republican budget proposal. It reads like what would happen if The
Onion put together a budget. "Area Man Releases Proposal for 2010 Federal
Spending Priorities." (Though, to paraphrase William F. Buckley, it turns out
that I'd prefer a federal budget written by an area man than the first six
names on the House Republican Leadership roster.)
Bush, famously, described his first budget by saying, "It's clearly a budget.
It's got a lot of numbers in it." Indeed it was, and did. This isn't There are
no numbers. Let me repeat that: The Republican budget proposal does not say how
much money they would raise, or spend. ... The threat going around the Capitol
is that some impish Democratic chairman will ask the CBO to try and score the
Republican proposal. ...

Apparently all the numbers fell out of the Republican's budget plan when Rep.
Boehner was holding it up in the air waving it around at their press
conference, because there sure weren't any in the final copy they handed out....

While reporters hooted at the comically simplistic charts and lack of details

Ex-Official: Bush Panicked After 9/11
http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2009/03/27/politics/main4897315.shtml
A former State Department lawyer tells The Associated Press that the Bush
administration panicked after 9/11 and tortured prisoners.
Former President George W. Bush denied anyone was tortured. But Vijay
Padmanabhan is at least the second insider to publicly describe as torture the
so-called "enhanced interrogation techniques" used by the U.S.
Padmanabhan was the department's chief counsel on Guantanamo litigation. He
says it was "foolish" for the Bush administration to declare that detainees
were beyond the reach of U.S. and international laws and the Geneva Conventions.
He told the AP Friday that "Guantanamo was one of the worst overreactions of
the Bush administration." ...

Detainee's Harsh Treatment Foiled No Plots
http://tinyurl.com/c66c82
When CIA officials subjected their first high-value captive, Abu Zubaida, to
waterboarding and other harsh interrogation methods, they were convinced that
they had in their custody an al-Qaeda leader who knew details of operations yet
to be unleashed, and they were facing increasing pressure from the White House
to get those secrets out of him.
The methods succeeded in breaking him, and the stories he told of al-Qaeda
terrorism plots sent CIA officers around the globe chasing leads.
In the end, though, not a single significant plot was foiled as a result of Abu
Zubaida's tortured confessions, according to former senior government officials
who closely followed the interrogations. Nearly all of the leads attained
through the harsh measures quickly evaporated, while most of the useful
information from Abu Zubaida -- chiefly names of al-Qaeda members and
associates -- was obtained before waterboarding was introduced, they said. ...
