I usually rpi-update and apt update/upgrade regularly and have no issues with USB. Mine is a 2032c console with a USB to cat5 adaptor and 100 feet of cat5. Pretty soon I will move to the SDR driver and be done with the USB console connection. The <$10 USB SDR dongle from AliExpress has been working fine. Although with SDR you need a solution for pressure and inside temperature. The SDR does away with the locked Acurite console issue that cannot be resolved remotely.
