It appears that you're in your home directory. Unless that's where the syslog file is, nothing useful will happen using sudo gedit syslog.
Try setting the path to the syslog file... sudo gedit /var/log/syslog and that message is probably ignorable. The perils of running GUI programs from a terminal - a lot of noise.
