Wasn't there a Seinfeld episode along these lines?  George tries to return a book at a bookstore, but they won't take it because it had been in the bathroom?

On an unrelated, and semi-disgusting topic, the tv show Mythbusters had a segment on fecal coliform bacteria and its prevalence in different parts of the bathroom.  They did their test by exposing toothbrushes to the bathroom air environment, placed all over, and they used all the toothbrushes during the experiment, to see how far the bacteria could spread.  Bottom (ha!) line was that fecal coliform bacteria was everywhere, even in the control toothbrushes placed in the kitchen.

My unposted submission:

At my previous office, one of the guys used to stop by the lobby on
the way to the bathroom to grab a newspaper.  Upon his return, he'd
drop the paper back on the lobby credenza.  The receptionist would
then promptly throw that paper away.
