It isn't nearly as painful as people think it is going to be... The worst pain doesn't actually happen at the end it happens about 3/4 of the way though. If people realized that and just went with it then they would okay. BTW epidurals do not take away all of the pain and can cause a lot of pain (the insertion and the headaches afterwards) themselves.
I went natural for several reasons.
1) I knew people who were expecting a pain free childbirth only to have the epidural not work. I would rather just prepare.
2) The health of the baby can be effected by drugs (drowsy babies do not nurse as well after birth and nursing helps stop the mother's bleeding).
3) Bounce back from natural births is much quicker than even an epidural birth not to mention a c-section.
4) My husband wanted to be an important part of the birth and the method of natural child birth we used allows husbands to be a major part of the experience. I truly believe Todd being as important as he was in the birth helped form him into the amazing partner he is.
I would never suggest a natural birth to someone who wasn't willing to work for it. I took an AMAZING childbirth class that was 2 hours a week for 12 weeks but boy did we know EXACTLY what we were in for. It was also helpful that we had a doula (a non medical person who helps mothers through all stages of labor).
It;s not for everyone but if there are any people even slightly open to the idea of a natural birth please feel free to contact me... the births of both of my daughters were the most amazing things I have ever done. After that I KNOW I can handle ANYTHING.
Stepping down off my soap box.

Daria, you remind me of one of my close friends that had a similar
experience with childbirth. I constantly tell her to stop making
the rest of womankind look like wimps! I haven't had kids yet, but
I have every intention of taking all drugs possible to dull the pain.
