Canadian perspective here - I don't think the strip is set in Toronto or any big city. Johnson herself lives (lived?) in a relatively small northern place. And I don't recall any "downtown" stories. However, that said, I live in the country (southern, not far from the U.S. border). The local village & rural gas stations are still owned by whites. The service stations in the nearest town are Indian, and in the nearest city (Ottawa, the capital), by a variety of Visible Minority immigrants.
Motels ditto. One of the earliest gas=station Indians in my nearby town took over the attached restaurant too and, for a while, offered Indian food on Saturday nights. Sigh. They've moved on and now I have to drive to Ottawa for Indian (or any ethnic) food. Save "Chinese".
