It could be harder to win when you have alliances. Dune (the boardgame) used
to have some optional rules for doing this.

The PBEM game Phoenix (written by Don Woods) had some interesting ideas
for alliances. They were hidden while alliances were small. Once formally
allied, everyone in the alliance had to agree to disband the alliance.
