I see.  I guess that is not a bad way to set it up.  Then the idea of a team
game can remain basically as it is (that is, current 2v2 maps could have the
"default" teams already set under the map defaults), and players are free to
adjust "do allies take control of my villages" and "do my leaders work on
allied units" and the like, without changing the basic team settings.  Of
course, players are always free to do all sorts of crazy things anyway.  ;)

Personally, I see this as a real boon to FFA games, but I don't want my 2v2
and 3v3 games to change by default.  I think that this would be the basic
position of the lion's share of the mp community.  Then again, I'm excited
about the ability to tweak settings, and I look forward to playing around
with this in the future.
