See https://help.github.com/articles/what-is-my-disk-quota -- they simply claim that performance may start to deteriorate after your repository is larger than 1GB. Are you sure that Sourceforge might not be similar? (Or that our performance will deteriorate there without them letting us know up-front) Is the limitation perhaps more related to the scalability of git itself rather than a limitation github adds?
