Well in the 8 years or so that I have been using the WhatsUp! or WhatsUp! Gold products I have not had that problem or even worried about it. So I really couldn't say what to do. I do the regular cover SMTP with TAP but for the most part my install and the product for that matter has proven to be bullet proof.
If you are on a WAN you could find someone else with a WUG install and ask them to check your system by HTTP. I guess between my APC's, Lieberts, NetBotz, etc I would have something that could get through to inform me of a major datacenter problem.
