Sorry for another post about this.... I realized that I could provide some additional information. WhatsUp Pro is database driven. Copying WUG map files into a certain WUP directory will not cause them to imported into the database. This is what the UpgradeApp.exe does. This is how the UpgradeApp works: 1) It reads all the notification definitions (now called Actions in Pro) found under your Whatsup8\Notification directory and inserts them into the Pro Database. 2) It reads all your monitor definitions (now called Active Monitors in Pro) found in your services.ini file in the Whatsup8 directory. and inserts them into the Pro Database. 3) It reads all your Event Definitions (now called Passive Monitors in Pro) found under your Whatsup8\Events directory and inserts them into the Pro Database. 4) It reads all your device types from your HostType.ini file and inserts them into the Pro Database. 5)*** It reads all your maps from whatever directory that you've designated as the 'Map' directory found under v8 Web Settings. Now, this is where some complication occurs. Triggering Notifications in Whatsup 8 and earlier are very different to the Whatsup Pro model. ( this is what Robert Glatt was alluding to) Instead of firing a notification after a device/monitor has been down for X number of polls, notifications (actions) are fired when they fall into a defined state. So for example, I have a notification that fires after 4 'down' polls.... and my poll interval is 60 seconds. This means that in simple terms that a notification will be fired when a device is down for 4 minutes. In Whatsup Pro, if you wanted to trigger something on a 'down 4 minutes' state, you would define a 'down 4 minutes' state. Arbitrarily '4 minutes' is an important interval for you. During the upgrade, we try to map your trigger * poll interval to the best predefined state. But, this is somewhat problematic because we do not want to create new states for you automatically. So if i have a trigger of 40 and a poll interval of 30. This is 20 minutes... We will match to the biggest predefined state that is in WhatsUp Pro. The reason why we do not automatically create the "down 20 minute" state for you is that if you were inconsistent on your trigger time or poll interval, you would create MANY states, which would greatly detract from the usability of the system. For example, lets say i have a poll interval of 60 seconds, and i have 50 devices. Each one with a trigger from 1 to 50. If we automatically created the device states based on the Wug 8 configuration then everytime you went to add a new action, you would have 50 states to select from. *Please note that I referred to your version 8 installation directory as Whatsup8... this name is merely the name of your version 8 installation directory. I know that is is a VERY long post....I hope it provides some insight to how WUG8 works compared to WU and how upgrade is done. ~Brian Miller Ipswitch ----- Original Message ----- From: "Gary Swanton" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sent: Wednesday, November 17, 2004 5:45 PM Subject: RE: [WhatsUp Forum] A few early issues. Hi Robert, My maps are located in E:\Program Files\Whatsup\Maps and the default installation location of WUG Pro is E:\Program Files\Ipswitch. I did think of that but I thought that the installation wizard would've prompted that it had discovered a previous version and did I want to install into the same location and Upgrade. I have also looked at the new versions folder structure and thought about copying the previous maps into a subfolder of WUG Pro but couldn't identify where. Also what about the existing alerts, notifications and custom services. The import of maps is important but just a time consuming would be the need to recreate everything else. Thanx for the input. If your current version of WUG has its maps saved in a different directory than the standard then the upgrade will not see your current stuff properly. What directory do you have your maps in ?? -----Original Message----- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Gary Swanton Sent: Wednesday, November 17, 2004 4:58 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: RE: [WhatsUp Forum] A few early issues. OK - I didn't think of that, but the network guys have told me only to use port 81 on the server where I am running WUG, so I couldn't do that anyway. Anyway I have been told to place the implementation on hold now that it has been discovered I will have to manually recreate my 175 devices spread over 15maps and also recreate all the alerts / recurring notifications.... Myself and senior management are amazed that there appears to be no upgrade path from our previous version of WUG. I thought the same thing - I installed WUG Pro but then wanted to still use WUG Gold but every time I opened the browser, the new version login screen appeared. You have to stop the Ipswitch WhatsUp Engine service to stop the webserver then you can restart the previous version WUG Service and keep using the previous version of WUG. First I thought someone said that the new WUG uses IIS? But I can turn off all the IIS services and the WUG web server still runs. Second. I created a device. Then I created a group. I moved the device into the group. In the list view it shows the device under the group. But the map view still shows the device and view at the same level??
