I think the reason you were not presented with an upgrade dialog was because
there was (at that time) no database to put anything into. In fact, in this
situation, I don't think UpgradeApp.exe is even deliveted.

And the reason there's no database would be connected to your question 2).
"What if I don't want MSDE installed..". I am assuming that you selected not to
install MSDE and that then led to the "no upgrade dialog" situation.

One approach is to run install and select "YES" to MSDE... this giving you a
database to import into. Run upgrade, but bear in mind the "E:\" problem might
require an Uninstall followed by Reinstall at this point.

Once you have an MSDE database that now contains WhatsUp Gold data, you can
detach the database and attach it to SQL. It will be necessary to create the
DSN and run NMConfig but you should then have SQL (not MSDE) up and running
with WhatsUp Gold data.

Thanx Mark,

A couple of further questions as a result of
your post.

1. I was never presented with an upgrade dialogue box at the time of
installation - why
2. What if I don't want MSDE installed as part of the installation as
we already have an existing SQL server to connect to ?
3. Where can you copy the UpgradeApp.exe from ? as the downloaded
installation media is a self extracting package

Thanx for your input.

Upgradeapp.exe is actually removed right at the end of the Install
process.

The logic for this is to actively prevent the risk of duplication
previously mentioned. Some items plain won't duplicate.. SNMP Trap
Events, for instance. Device Type Groups will duplicate. Run
UpgradeApp.exe twice and you will get two Device Types (Imported) and no
way to clean up except via accessing the database directly. Yes, a
Feature Request is already logged here.. covering creation, deletion,
and renaming of Device Type Groups, and the ability to specify Group
when creating or editing a Device Type.

Anyway, so there's no UpgradeApp.exe available after Install is
completed. But it IS available before Install is completed.
Specifically, when the Upgrade dialog appears on screen. WhatsUp
Professional is fully installed at this point. The database is there.
It's all ready to use. The only thing that has not yet been done is
choose whether or not to run Upgrade and actually pull in WhatsUp Gold
config data. There's an opportunity to do two things here:

1) Switch to Explorer and make a copy UpgradeApp.exe.

2) Start up the WhatsUp Professional console and do some "pre-config".
Robert Glatt mentioned that the default WhatsUp Professional Device
States (Down 5 mins, Down 20 mins, etc) did not meet his specific needs
(Down 15 mins, etc). Well, creating a "Down 15 mins" Device State NOW
will then allow you to switch back to Install and run Upgrade and obtain
a 1:1 match. i.e, imported monitors will alert at 15 minutes.

So, if you have a copy of UpgradeApp.exe you can run it at a time of
your deciding. If you do not run it twice then there won't be a risk of
bringing in anything twice. However, if you run it after creating
devices and then upgrade WhatsUp Gold maps with those same devices then
you will have tidying up to do.

Another issue in this thread is Gary Swanton's problem with WhatsUp Gold
not being installed on C: drive.

> My maps are located in E:\Program Files\Whatsup\Maps
> and the default installation location of WUG Pro is E:\Program
> Files\Ipswitch.

This problem has been duplicated and is a defect. It's all caught up
with the delivery of MSDE... and therein lies the workaround.

1) Install WhatsUp Professional. This delivers MSDE. You know that
UpgradeApp.exe won't work so no need to run it.

2) Uninstall WhatsUp Professional. Choose the option to remove data.
This will not remove MSDE.

3) So now you have MSDE and no WhatsUp Professional.

4) Install WhatsUp Professional. MSDE is already present so it does not
get delivered. Now you can choose to run the upgrade. It should bring
in the data from E:\ drive (or wherever).

The upgradeApp.exe can be found in the WhatUp Professional installation
directory after you've installed the product. It is important to note
that if you run the UpgradeApp multiple times, you will create duplicate
entries in the database. So for example, lets say that you have Bob's
Pager in v8. If you run the Upgrade App 3 times... you will have 3
versions of Bob's Pager in the WhatsUp Pro. Ofcourse you can always
clean this up later...
