Leigh, Apology for my (very) tardy response ...;-(. I'm a little overloaded at the moment - but that's a good sign - means I'm still wanted.
Ecto is a cool technology - that said, I don't see LMSs/PLEs as "competition" for WikiEducator. For me - WikiEd is a community of educators that are working together to develop free content that can be used in a variety of contexts - including the incorporation into LMss, PLEs or whatever. Recognising my biases that have been informed by a career in open distance learning - content (which in my vocab is inclusive of the learning activities and subject matter) is a key element in what we're trying to achieve. There's an interesting post by David Wiley over at Terra Incognito relating to content as infrastructure - see: http://blog.worldcampus.psu.edu/index.php/2007/10/03/content-is-infrastructure/ BTW - Have not forgotten about finding workable solutions around the issues of embedding 3rd party media. With all my travels - progress has fallen a little behind. It's an important decision which I hope that we can collectively manage with the responsibility it deserves. My main issue is to think about the potential impact (both advantages and disadvantages) of pages that would contain links to third party media. For example - when you go to Wikipedia, you know that all the content is free and resides on the WMF servers - apart from external links. Compare this, for example when you go to a site like Curriki. A large percentage of the resources do not meet the requirements of the free cultural works definition. It's frustrating as a user going to a site which you think is free content and finding a whole bunch of stuff which is not. You've already made a strong case for third party media, and we will give this the attention it deserves. Perhaps I'm erring on the side of caution here - but I don't want us to make mistakes that we will regret later on. I do promise to keep the community well appraised of developments and all thoughts and ideas to manage this properly will be discussed openly and transparently. Chat to you soon.
