Hi,
I registered last week, so I'm not really all that up to speed on things.
But thought I'd put in my 2 cents anyway. The first thing I did after
registering and realizing that I was serious and motivated about
contributing was to look around at other user pages. Then, I started my user
page. And after that I went to the WE tutorials and made myself follow them
to the end. The tutorials suggested I imagine a project that I'd like to
make happen and I did -- a collection of tutorials on statistics and
probability, enough to make a whole traditional course. Kinda pie in the
sky, but hey.

Once I'd written about this project, I just wasn't sure what to do next. I
did a lot of looking around. I've decided to work on the math glossary.
First because it is a good first step to what I want to do, but also it's an
active project and this seemed to be a key factor in my getting involved in
something.

In the process of looking around, I read the to do list on the community
page...a number of times, but I didn't feel competent enough for any of
these. I'm a newbie. I looked at some of the portals and the initiatives and
ideas4content pages and many of the projects that I felt I could help in
didn't seem active.

So based on my newbie experience, I wonder if there needs to be better (or
more strategically placed) information on how to get involved. The
naturally-occurring positive and negative incentives in the direct
environment have the most impact on behavior (in this case participation).

I do have to say that I'm not sure I would have gotten this far if I hadn't
gotten such a warm welcome from the wikineighbors. Thanks for making me feel
welcome right from the get-go!
