Dear Wayne and Gurmit,
I think it is a very important concept and needs to be explored in
great depth by as many as possible. We have established a particular
economy on the basis of individual user pay system. Have we explored
or even have any comprehensive view of how that paradigm might be
changed? I would think that there may be some socio-economic thinkers
around our globe who may be able to put a different spin on this
paradigm. Karl Marx tried at one time to suggest thinking differently
about the economic merry-go-round; however that thinking did not
significantly shift the 'industrialised' paradigm. Perhaps with the
internet, we may be able to think outside the box a bit more that we
could in the late 1800's and early 1900's up to now

There is a very interesting piece in Johnathan Zittrain's book 'The
Future of the Internet'. (chapter 6 -p127). In this piece he talks
about the debate between having rules and regulations, vs, standards
or guidelines. I think generally, we have an over concern with making
everything the same for everyone instead of looking at the need to
learn to inform our actions. I think we need to concentrate more on
the whole process of learning rather than put so much store on the
content of learning (e.g. what is published and by whom under what
conditions). Learning is very contextual, and contexts are different
for all of us. however, we do need to continue discussing the options
so that we can find a way around our dilemmas.

Regards
Cherry
