Ian, On further investigation, a bank account is not needed to open a paypal account, but it is required to withdraw funds from the paypal account. It may be possible to use this, temporarily storing the fees in the account prior to us having a bank account, but we may want to pass the fees onto the person sending the membership fee rather than paying it on receipt. There are other issues, e.g. anyone with access to the account could do whatever they wanted with the money held in it, and the time difference between sending a paypal fee and sending a membership application form.
I'll raise this at the next board meeting (next Tuesday) for discussion. BTW: we won't be cashing cheques; they'll be held until we have a bank account. Note that cheques are different from paypal accounts in that money leaves the person's bank account at different times; one when paying the cheque into the account, the other when the payment is sent.
