Usually interested students would've approached projects/possible mentors
and started working well before the application start deadline ( Its not a
necessity, but would increase your chance ).

Looks like you are not looking into #mediawiki and #wikimedia-dev
seriously. Prospective students are required ( and they are doing well ) to
start working with micro-tasks well before the student application start
deadline. Personally, I could see that microtasks getting assigned and
worked upon within hours after posting in the phab page.
