I had several Epson Stylus ink-jet printers. Although they work fine initially, if they are not used for a while the ink dries up in the nozzles. Even a new cartridge did not help. You can try the head cleaning utility, although it didn't help me: select the printer, right-click, Properties, Utilities.
My solution was to get a laser printer ($99) for the bulk of my printing needs, and a Canon Pixma ink-jet ($49) for the occasional color jobs.
