The point of the post was that Winzip will no longer be free after a period of
21 days
wether or not if anyone uses i. I use WinZip and PkZip either or if I choose to
use it.

I have the last free version of WinZip 9.0 before it went play or pay. "MARC

Rick Glazier says:
I have been a registered user since ver 5.6 (1994-6?) and it has (since at
least that time)
been shareware. I got it in a special sale (with a coupon) for $20, and all
upgrades
since then were free to all users. They even used to send out postcards to tell
you
to come and get the new version free when available, (WEB downloads).
They sent me the program on a floppy when I signed up.
While it seems to have fallen behind "a little" in the feature set recently, I
liked the
addition of 256-AES encryption.

One thing that was their "downfall" was the use of the honor system for
registrations.
Back at ver 5.6, all it did was come on after several months and tell you how
many
archives you had opened and remind you that it was supposed to be paid for.
I had opened over 500 archives and was well satisfied with the program, so I
felt
$20 was not too bad. Finding later that I got free program upgrades for the next
10-11 years was a bonus.. (He *obviously?* felt he did not need more money...
<grin>)

If you were never "nagged" to register, I guess WinZip got rid of that
warning...

I "think?" Phil Katz released some versions of PKZip as free before he died...
(I can't verify this since I did not use it... More below...)
