What Wayne says is accurate (see below...I use OE).

To add more information which would not apply to emails to the list (we use
only plain text.), if you have "reply in same format" and reply to a "HTML"
email, OE does not add the ">" but can add a | (i.e. vertical line). If you
switch to plain text after clicking "reply to", the | is removed and no ">"
appears.
