A friend of mine had satellite for a while before cable became available in his area. DirectPC or whatever it was called at the time. He was happy with it, except for game play; just too much latency for that. It was kind of expensive at the time ($80/month a think), even compared to most cable and DSL connections.

If you are out in the boonies with no other options available, it would definitely be better than dialup. Dialup, even on it's best day, runs at a snails pace. As the web becomes evermore graphics intensive, dialup appears less and less appealing. I honestly don't think I could stand it if I had to go back to dialup after having broadband for 3 years. (Ew. Just had shivers run down my spine. <grin>)
