Avoid extra cost warrantees - think of them more as a payment via the
manufacturer to an insurance company for the cost of replacement
In a way a Western Digital 3 year warranty is an extra cost (hidden cost)
warranty. I as an OEM have to pay more for a Western Digital hard drive with
a 3 year warranty than I have to pay for a Western Digital drive with a 1
year warranty. I am talking about the price of the hard drive to the OEM,
not the optional warranty offered to the end user.
Hard drives in name brand computers come under the overall warranty of the
computer which is usually 1 year. Watch out for white box builders who often
opt for the cheaper hard drives with the 1 year warranty. Again, we are
discussing the purchase price of the hard drive, not the optional warranty
sometimes offered to the end user.
Please note that you have the option to by from an white box builder and
instruct them to install a 5 year warranty SATA Seagate hard drive. That way
if the white box builder goes out of business, at least your hard drive is
covered by Seagate for 5 years. If you go this route, obtain the hard drive
serial number from the computer builder, look it up at the Seagate site and
ensure that it is a 5 year warranty drive.
