To allow for other programs, updates, service packs, and free space for
defrag to work with, I'd allocate at least 8 GB to an XP system partition.

There will be more than just C:\Windows on that drive. Just let XP setup
things the way it wants. Use the other partition for data files. The one
thing XP puts on C: that you mway want to move, the "documents and settings"
folder, can be handled as follows:

That's kind of complicated way to do things when he can just right click the My Documents folder on his desktop then click Properties & change it's target location to anything he wants. I change it to C:\My Documents\ for many of my clients so it's just like 98 was then you can run Tweakui.exe & change many of the default locations for folders. I would change them to sub folders of My Documents. I have my Start Menu & Favorites there as well as this makes it nice & easy to do quick backups. I must confess that I don't do it this way as I have a reg file to do most of my customizations for me that I apply when setting up a new machine but have done it the way that I've described when working at remote locations. FWIW & nothing against Karen but I don't use any of her tools as I can copy folders quickly enough from with TC [total commander].
