what are the advantages
of having that 2nd partition, just for the Documents directory?

The advantage is that an image backup of the system partition is kept to a
manageable size.

That's one good reason but another is the Documents directory contains items that you have created. There is NO Backup of this anywhere. You can NOT re-install your documents like you can with Windows. The advantage Carl is talking about is that it's much faster to restore an image of the system than it is to re-install Windows plus if you keep the OS up to date with the current patches & the image back up to date then at most you're out a half an hour restoring the image file BUT if you lose the Documents directory & you don't have a backup then how long would it take to recreate all the stuff that is lost? I wager that it would be much longer than if you had to reinstall Windows with all it's patches from scratch if the stuff is even replaceable at all. Anything that is important to you put in that Documents directory & please at least backup the Documents directory if one doesn't backup anything else.
