Didn't MS just start checking the serial? Or did you test it back then?

This may further reflect what I have been posting about. You purchase a name brand computer. You feel ok, since your COA is affixed to your computer and it has your Product Key. You format and reinstall. You use that Product Key from the COA. Sometimes Windows will not accept it, so you can not proceed with your installation. Sometimes Windows does install using your COA Product Key but fails to authenticate. Then you end up calling Microsoft. Since I repair computers I have lots of experience with this. I learned not to call the computer manufacturer. If you call the computer manufacturer you will learn this one thing:

They give no service after the warranty expires even if it is a manufacturer's defect (such as using a Product Key that is not the one on the COA to install Windows.)

Some disagree with me and take up for computer manufacturers who pull this stunt, even justifying their actions. My experience proves to me and my customers it is a huge problem and the computer manufacturer simply does not care!
