You may even persuade the supplier to sell an OEM windows version with an
OEM drive.
Some suppliers simply toss in a screw as qualifying hardware to sell OEM
Windows. Since any enforcement of compliance with the qualifications that
dictate which version of Windows you are to use (OEM, Full or Upgrade) is
only token, why penalize the few who do not know the workarounds? Let
everyone who is willing to spend $90.00 have a copy of Windows Home Edition
(OEM or Upgrade) and a Product Key that will authenticate when installed.
Many ask the price of Windows as if it has changed over the years. For me it
has not. All OEM or Upgrade versions of Windows 95, 98, 98SE, Me or XP Home
has been $90.00 around Albany, GA. It is the Full version that costs double
that, around $180.00. With Upgrade you need a qualifying CD to allow the
installation process to examine. With OEM you need a formatted host
partition, usually your C Drive.
It is hard to draw a fine line between advocating or not advocating software
piracy when Microsoft is so nit picky about the various versions of Windows,
but enforcement is so token that workarounds are very easy. It is almost
like they are penalizing a novice by charging them $180.00 for Windows Home
if they build their own computer or have a buddy build it. Yet if you ask
Microsoft, that is the only way they will approve.
